malossi torque driver 619223 doesnt work as it should.

Postby boxybrown » Wed Mar 20, 2013 11:08 am

I just got my malossi torque driver yesterday in the mail. Installed it right away, and i was impressed. Acceleration was amazing, with no dips in rpm after 35, and amazing roll on from deceleration. Problem after 39mph the revs shot up and i was hitting the limiter at 41 mph.

Before installing the malossi torque driver, i was running the malossi variator, the same white contra ive been using for months, and 5.75 mixed sliders. This got me multiple gps confirmed 47 mph, after a long build up in the top end. And i would only hit the limiter downhill or fully tucked on flats.

So after endless combinations of heavier weights, going back to stock contra, and long rides hitting big hills, I still was hitting the limiter at the exact same spot. So its not something with the weights, its physical. After taking the rear pulley off and playing with it, i noticed that the malossi torque driver was actually a bit longer on the shaft than stock, so the shaft above the slots hit the backside of the clutch and wouldn't fully open, limiting belt travel.

Im not sure who dropped the ball at malossi, but the torque drover does not work properly.

NOOOOOO! I just ordered one monday. I wonder how gabe's is working with the full malossi kit. Are you running the malossi clutch? Maybe that compensates for it?

There is a possibility that the fly clutch has a groove, but it would have to be deep, and i highly doubt it. i can see where the stock TD when fully open meets flush with where the clutch sits, and the malossi goes past that point. There is just too much material at the top.

Gabe hasnt posted and gps results, but i dont think he was getting it fully open either.

Who did you order the torque driver from?

You might still be able to cancel. Im showing my friend tonight to see if he can machine it 2mm and make it work properly.

Ill keep you updated.

And i looked into the malossi clutch. No special groove or anything. It was a good idea though.

I just dropped the torque driver off at my friends, and he doesn't see a problem in removing enough material to not hit the clutch. I told him to remove 2.2mm which should make it sit flush with the clutch. Should be done by the end of this week. Hopefully this does the trick.

Taking the 2mm off the torque driver fixed the problem. The pulley can fully open and pins travel all the way in the grooves. I no longer hit the "wall" at 40. Top speed is the same as before, 47mph, but the acceleration is soo much better. Its really crazy to hear the rpms so constant all the way to top speed. No dip in rpms around 30 anymore. This is one of the best mods ive done on the C3.

Whats a trip is that before I was running 5.75 slider mix on the old TD, and that was the best i could get it to run was on those weights. Now im down to 4.5 sliders and im still on the heavy side. Its amazing how much more efficient the cvt is now.

Ill post some pics later tonight of the pulley fully open and how it meets flush.

So glad to hear this! How does it like your lightened flywheel?
